Geopolitical Flashpoints Multiply

The strongman stagecraft is playing out against a backdrop of intensifying global tensions.

Mexico vs. the United States: Former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador publicly accused US officials of “plotting to weaken Morena” — the governing party — and strengthen the right-wing opposition. In a lengthy letter posted on X, López Obrador alleged that Washington was using investigations into several Mexican governors and propaganda to “restore a subservient, corrupt, mafia-like, and cruel government.” The accusations mark a new low in what have been steadily deteriorating bilateral relations.

EU eyes the Strait of Hormuz: The European Union is reportedly considering expanding its Red Sea naval mission, Operation Aspides, to include mine-clearing operations in the Strait of Hormuz. According to an internal document cited by RT, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has proposed that Aspides assume the “primary role” in the strategic shipping lane, complementing a French-British coalition. The move would represent a significant expansion of the EU’s military footprint in one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.

Israel-Lebanon ceasefire tensions: A ceasefire plan between Israel and Lebanon, brokered under US guidance, has been denounced by Hezbollah as a “roadmap for the annihilation of the Lebanese people.” Israel, meanwhile, has continued military operations in southern Lebanon despite the agreement, underscoring the fragility of the deal.
