Greece and France Deepen Defense Ties Amid Regional Instability

Against this volatile backdrop, France and Greece are moving to strengthen their own military partnership. French President Emmanuel Macron is scheduled to visit Athens on April 24–25, immediately after an interim EU summit in Cyprus. His meeting with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to serve as “ground zero” for the next generation of the Greek submarine fleet.

The French proposal for Blacksword Barracuda submarines is reported to be a central topic at the Maximos Mansion talks. According to Ta Nea, Paris is seeking to deepen its strategic relationship with Athens amid shifting global and European power dynamics — an effort that extends beyond arms deals to a broader realignment in the Eastern Mediterranean. Prince Albert of Monaco is also expected to accompany Macron to Greece for related engagements.
