Greece Battles Wildfires and Arrests Arsonists

As summer temperatures climb across the Mediterranean, Greece is already grappling with its annual wildfire crisis. In a single 24-hour period, five people were arrested across the country for fire-related offenses.

In Fthiotida, a 63-year-old man was detained after sparks from his agricultural tractor ignited a blaze. Additional arrests were made in Serres, Attica, and Rhodes for negligence-related fires. Separately, in Chania, Crete, a 45-year-old Ukrainian woman was arrested for deliberate arson after she burned personal belongings in dry grass, sparking a fire.

On the island of Evia, a forest fire in the Spathari area was contained after an aerial response involving eight aircraft and three helicopters — a reminder of the massive resources Greece must deploy each fire season.
