Hantavirus Alert in Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego

A new variant of hantavirus has been identified in rodents in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina — but health authorities stressed it is different from the strain that killed three people aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius. Argentina’s Ministry of Health, citing analysis by the Malbrán Virology Institute, confirmed that the rodents tested were not the source of the shipboard outbreak, ruling out a direct environmental link to the cruise ship infections. The investigation continues, but the discovery of a separate circulating variant has kept health authorities on alert.
