Humanitarian Aid Faces an Existential Crisis

The global humanitarian system is under siege — and not just from the usual suspects. According to Ted Chaiban, deputy executive director of UNICEF, massive funding cuts from the United States, Germany, and other major donor nations are threatening the very future of international aid.

“It’s not only the USA,” Chaiban warned in an interview with Der Spiegel. The cuts are cascading through international organizations at a time when global need — driven by conflict, climate displacement, and food insecurity — is at historic highs. The warning comes as the system that has sustained millions of vulnerable people, particularly children, faces what may be its most severe funding crisis in decades.
