India’s defense posture received a significant boost this week with the commissioning of the INS Taragiri, an indigenously built stealth frigate capable of carrying BrahMos supersonic missiles. The warship was inducted into the Indian Navy at Visakhapatnam, headquarters of the Eastern Naval Command, by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh.
Singh framed the commissioning as a statement of both strategic ambition and self-reliance. “This commissioning highlights the strategic and maritime importance of India’s eastern seaboard as well as the Indian Navy’s sustained focus on strengthening its combat readiness and operational might while strongly reinforcing the objectives of Aatmanirbhar Bharat [Self-reliant India],” he said.
The stealth frigate represents a growing trend in India’s defense sector: building critical military platforms domestically. This comes at a time when the country is also grappling with strategic vulnerabilities in other domains — notably a 100% import dependency on helium, a gas critical to industries from semiconductors to healthcare. Ashok Chandak, President of the India Electronics and Semiconductor Association, warned this week that “critical gases like Helium must be treated as strategic inputs as India scales its semiconductor ecosystem.”
