Iran Moves to Charge Fees on the Strait of Hormuz

Iran’s Ambassador to China, Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, has announced that Tehran will introduce service fees for ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most critical oil chokepoints. The move, being coordinated with Oman, follows a temporary 60-day agreement with the United States that kept the waterway open to commercial shipping after a recent conflict.

The details remain vague, but the geopolitical implications are significant. Roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil passes through the strait daily. Any new fee structure could reshape global shipping costs, add friction to energy markets, and test the fragile diplomatic understanding between Tehran and Washington.
