Lebanon: Diplomacy Under Fire

On the military front, Israeli strikes killed three people in Lebanon on Tuesday as Beirut prepared to seek an extension of the existing truce. Israel called on the Lebanese government to “work together” against Hezbollah ahead of talks scheduled for Thursday. But the situation remains deeply volatile: France and Lebanon jointly condemned the death of a second UN peacekeeper — French Sergeant-Major Florian Montorio — in an attack attributed to Hezbollah, raising the specter of the conflict spiraling further beyond its current boundaries.
