Meta’s AI Image Generator: Your Face, Without Your Consent

Privacy advocates raised alarms this week after Meta rolled out its new AI image generation tool, Muse Image AI, which allows users to tag public Instagram profiles and generate pictures that pull from faces featured in those posts. The tool, described by Meta as its “most advanced image generation model yet,” was released Tuesday.

The catch? Instagram users are not notified when their posts — and their likenesses — are fed into the system. Anyone with a public profile is opted in by default.

Privacy experts are urging Instagram users to review their privacy settings immediately. The concern is straightforward: a tool that can generate AI images of real people, without their knowledge or consent, opens the door to misuse — from deepfakes to harassment. Meta has not yet addressed how it plans to mitigate these risks.
