Mysterious Strikes Hit Iran as Middle East Tensions Spiral

The most consequential story of the day unfolded across the Middle East, where mysterious strikes targeted sites inside Iran following days of escalating hostilities between Washington and Tehran. According to The Hindu, the strikes came after Iran attacked at least three ships in the strategic Strait of Hormuz in recent days, prompting extensive US airstrikes on Iranian targets on Tuesday and Wednesday. Iran retaliated with attacks on Gulf countries, setting off a dangerous cycle of escalation.

Notably, Israel — which under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has waged an intense campaign against Iran — has not attacked the Islamic Republic since June, leaving the origin of the latest strikes unclear.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif entered the diplomatic fray, calling on Iran and all parties to exercise restraint. During a telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Sharif expressed “deep concern” over the escalation and “underscored the urge” not to jeopardize what he called “hard-earned peace gains.” The situation remains volatile, with no sign of de-escalation on the horizon.
