In South America, Peru’s presidential election remained on a knife’s edge. With nearly 96% of votes counted, Roberto Sánchez’s lead over Keiko Fujimori had narrowed to just 23,000 votes. The razor-thin margin guaranteed days — perhaps weeks — of legal and political tension in a country with a long history of contested elections and political instability. Fujimori, daughter of imprisoned former president Alberto Fujimori, has previously come agonizingly close to the presidency, and the tight count suggested she would not concede easily.
