Peru’s Uncertain Election

On the other side of the world, Peru is gripped by electoral uncertainty. The country held its 2026 presidential elections on April 12, and as ONPE (the national elections office) continues its official vote count across regions — from Cusco to Ica, Huánuco to Huancavelica — there is still no certainty about which candidates will advance to the second round. Results continue to shift as ballots are tallied, and ONPE has been forced to publicly deny misinformation, including claims that its staff signed blank tally sheets at a polling station in Trujillo. The contested count points to a deeply divided electorate and a second round that could go in any number of directions.
