Race Against Time in Earthquake-Hit Venezuela

Four days after a devastating earthquake struck Venezuela on June 24, international rescue teams are fighting to free a man trapped in the deepest underground level of a condominium parking structure in Playa Grande, La Guaira state.

Costa Rica’s Red Cross, working alongside colleagues from other countries, reported a breakthrough on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. local time: rescuers made contact with the man and confirmed he was alive, stable, and alert, sheltering inside a security booth in the parking area. “To enter and rescue him,” the Costa Rican National Director of Emergency Response, Wagner Leiva, told the public, requires navigating a totally destroyed building — a painstaking and dangerous process. The rescue effort continues.
