Samsung Smartwatch Can Now Predict Fainting Episodes

In a quietly significant medical technology breakthrough, Samsung has validated an AI algorithm running on the Galaxy Watch 6 that can predict vasovagal syncope — the most common form of fainting — before it occurs. The clinical study, conducted with Chung-Ang University Hospital in Gwangmyeong, South Korea, used photoplethysmography sensors already embedded in the watch to detect the telltale drops in blood pressure and heart rate that precede an episode.

Vasovagal syncope itself is generally harmless, but the falls it causes are not: fractures, head injuries, and other trauma from sudden collapses are a serious medical concern, particularly among older adults. A wearable that can issue advance warnings could meaningfully reduce emergency room visits and injury-related healthcare costs.
