Smalley Leads a Wide-Open PGA Championship

At Aronimink Golf Club near Philadelphia, the PGA Championship leaderboard has been “spinning like a tombola.” Heading into Sunday’s final round, 29-year-old American Alex Smalley — world No. 78, who has never won a professional tournament — holds a two-shot lead at six under par after a third-round 68.

Five players sit tied for second at four under, including Jon Rahm, while Rory McIlroy lurks at three under. Australians Cameron Smith and Jason Day are among 42 players within four shots of second place. Philadelphia loves an underdog, but the sheer density of big names in contention suggests Smalley will face enormous pressure on Sunday.
