T-MEC Trade Deal Hits Its Deadline Without Renewal

The July 1 deadline for the automatic renewal of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (T-MEC, also known as USMCA) passed without any of the three member nations signaling their intent to extend the pact for another 16 years. President Trump declared in June that he was “not looking to renew” the deal — one he himself signed during his first term. Without automatic renewal, the agreement remains in force but will be subject to annual reviews until 2036, injecting fresh uncertainty into North American trade relations at a time of already heightened tariff tensions.
