Twin Bombs Rock Damascus During Macron’s Historic Visit

Two bombs exploded near the Four Seasons hotel in Damascus on Tuesday — the same hotel where French President Emmanuel Macron was staying during the first visit by an EU head of state to Syria since jihadist forces reshaped the country’s political landscape. The blasts struck a busy area between the Tourism Ministry and the National Museum, just minutes after Macron’s convoy departed.

At least 18 people were wounded, including four police officers, according to the Syrian Interior Ministry. Macron’s office said the president was unaware of the explosions and proceeded to meet with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa as scheduled. The attack underscores the fragile security situation in Syria even as European leaders seek to re-engage with Damascus’s new government.
