U.S.-Iran Standoff Intensifies in the Strait of Hormuz

The most consequential story of the day unfolded in one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints. American forces attacked Iranian tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, releasing video of the operation with the declaration: “We neutralized them.” U.S. officials affirmed that “American forces remain committed to the full enforcement of the blockade on vessels entering or leaving Iran.”

The escalation came as a senior advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei made incendiary remarks comparing the Strait of Hormuz to a nuclear weapon. Mohammad Mokhber, speaking in a video released by the Mehr news agency, said: “For years, we overlooked the advantage of the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz represents an opportunity as valuable as the atomic bomb.” He underscored that “having in our hands a location that allows us to influence the global economy with a single decision is a great opportunity,” adding that “under no circumstances will the gains of this war be lost.”

Meanwhile, the New York Times reported that satellite imagery from the European Space Agency’s Copernicus Sentinel-2 detected an oil slick off Kharg Island in the Persian Gulf — Iran’s primary oil export terminal. The environmental and economic implications of an extended confrontation in these waters, through which roughly a fifth of the world’s oil passes daily, could be severe.
