As a new Ebola outbreak linked to the Bundibugyo strain continues to spread, the United States has launched an urgent vaccine development effort. UNICEF and Gavi, the global vaccine alliance, have begun soliciting information from manufacturers and developers about plans for a vaccine specifically targeting this strain, The Hindu reported. While existing vaccines have proven effective against the more common Zaire strain of Ebola, the Bundibugyo variant — first identified in Uganda in 2007 — presents distinct immunological challenges. The global health community is racing against time to prevent a repeat of the catastrophic West African Ebola epidemic of 2014–2016.
