Xi and Putin Double Down on Military Cooperation

Russian President Vladimir Putin traveled to Beijing this week for a summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping that produced a joint declaration pledging to strengthen military cooperation between the two powers. According to Der Spiegel, the statement addressed both the war in Ukraine and the conflict in Iran — and included what the outlet described as a “propaganda flourish.” The meeting underscores the increasingly formalized strategic alignment between Moscow and Beijing, a partnership that has deepened significantly since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the more recent US-Israeli military campaign against Iran.

The timing is notable. As both countries face varying degrees of Western economic pressure, their military bond sends an unmistakable signal to Washington and its allies: the authoritarian axis is consolidating, not fracturing.
