Zambia’s Vice President Survives Helicopter Crash

In a dramatic incident ahead of Zambia’s August 13 elections, Vice President Mutale Nalumango declared herself “safe and unharmed” after the helicopter carrying her and seven others crashed shortly after takeoff from the city of Nakonde. Nalumango, 71, was on a campaign tour in the northeastern part of the country when the accident occurred. Incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema is widely considered the favorite for re-election, and the crash — while not fatal — has added an unpredictable element to an already heated campaign season.
