In northeastern France, thieves struck the Lalique Museum in the small village of Wingen-sur-Moder, near the German border, making off with approximately €4 million worth of jewelry. Several masked individuals forced open a door at around 5:30am on Sunday, smashed six display cases, and fled with around 20 pieces.
The robbery is particularly embarrassing for French authorities: the Lalique Museum had reportedly been under “special attention” following last year’s brazen heist at the Louvre. Despite the heightened vigilance, the thieves managed to complete their operation and disappear before anyone could intervene. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
