US Launches Third Wave of Strikes on Iran as Strait of Hormuz Closes

Far from the football pitches, a far graver drama is unfolding in the Persian Gulf. The United States launched a third wave of military strikes against Iran this week, escalating a confrontation that now threatens one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes.

The strikes, carried out by US Central Command, came in response to an attack on a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz. Shortly before the latest American operation, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) declared the strategic waterway closed to all shipping indefinitely. Iran said the closure followed an incident in which a vessel travelling on an unapproved route was struck.

The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes daily, is a global economic chokepoint. Its indefinite closure could send shockwaves through energy markets and international supply chains.

The escalation puts severe strain on the memorandum of understanding signed by the US and Iran on June 17, which was intended to establish a lasting ceasefire and create space for broader peace negotiations. With three rounds of strikes in a single week, that diplomatic framework appears to be fraying rapidly. Details of the latest operations remain developing.
